This course will focus on taking a collection of loops and ideas and arranging them in the Arrangement View. Concepts will include: arrangement editing, track automation, common techniques for song arrangements, using locate markers, fade handles, basic mixing concepts such as gain staging, leaving headroom on the master track, subtractive EQing, using a compressor to control dynamics, and then finally some quick and dirty “mastering” techniques.

This program is conducted in an online group class setting, at the same high quality you've come to expect from our video courses, which have been enjoyed by over 30,000 students!
Participate in weekly lectures, submit assignments and collaborate with other students. Classes meet twice per week. Each class is 2 hours long and alternate between a lecture day and a lab day, with a homework assignment in between. You can also optionally drop in to regularly scheduled office hours for extra help from the instructor.
Since this program is entirely online, you can participate from the comfort of your own home. Students may join from anywhere in the world since classes are hosted in a virtual classroom (via Zoom), which includes seamless audio/video/screen streaming for each student.

Learn the differences between Arrangement View and Session View and how to move clips between the two views with ease or use the views simultaneously.
Learn about tools for arrangement like track sizing, zooming, fade handles, automation lanes, looping, etc.
Understand the linear timeline and how to record content from Session View into Arrangement View on the fly.
For homework, create an arrangement by workin gin Session View and then moving clips via recording, copying, pasting, or dragging between the two views.
In lab, students will share homework assignment results, gather feedback from the instructor and classmates, and discuss more techniques on how Session View and Arrangement View can be used simultaneously in the creative process.
Discuss arrangement concepts pertaining to different genres.
Learn about subdividing arrangements into 4/16 bar increments, common structures, etc.
Learn how to find the key signature of any song, import music into Ableton Live, and use the music as a template for arrangement practice.
In this week’s homework assignment, students will import a favorite song and label its structure with locate markers - then arrange an original composition based on the imported music’s structure.
In the lab session, students will share their homework with the group and discuss critical listening and techniques for music analysis.
Students will apply what they learned in lecture to produce an arrangement using fades, crossfades, split clips, and time based edits, as well as transitions.
Students will share assignments in lab for feedback, and discuss advanced approaches to tension and anticipation in shaping the energy of songs.
Learn more detailed editing techniques such as working with time (adding, deleting, duplicating on the fly), and splitting/consolidating clips.
Utilize techniques like reverse, crossfade, risers, drops in tension, and more to create engaging arrangements.
Discuss cycles, tension and release.
Students will apply automation techniques to their previous arrangement being conscious of the song’s overall energy and arc.
During the lab session, students will share their arrangements for feedback and go over custom audio effect racks for automating multiple effect parameters at once.
Learn how to create movement within arrangements using track automation.
Use various tools for applying automation like drawing, mouse pointer, context menu curves, etc.
Learn common use cases for automation like filter sweeps, panning, volume, delay and reverb tails.
Students apply proper gain staging, volume balancing, subtractive EQing, and dynamics processing to their previous arrangements, for homework.
In the lab session, after sharing and feedback, students will learn more advanced uses of EQ8, and the compressor to understand mid/side processing and side chains.
Learn mixing essentials starting with signal flow, gain-staging, EQing, understanding frequency ranges, panning, stereo width, and more.
Learn about controlling dynamic range with compression.
Understand summing and appropriate headroom levels for digital mixing.
In the final homework assignment, students will work on mastering their previous arrangements. They should use a combination of EQ, compressor and limiter for practice.
In the lab session, students will share their work and discuss ways to improve their results along with other advanced techniques for mastering.
Analyze various songs throughout various decades to get a sense of how mastering changed over the years.
Learn how to use a reference track to match your mastering specs to your favorite songs.
Learn about useful mastering chains and the appropriate tools for good sonic results.
